Watch the Bold Bree Newsome Climb 30ft to Remove Confederate Flag!
This morning, Bree Newsome, an activist based in South Carolina, climbed a flagpole in Columbia to remove the Confederate flag that flew in front of the Capitol building.
Reports confirm Newsome, 30, an organizer from Charlotte, North Carolina reached the flagpole’s midpoint at 15 feet in the air when police demanded she come down.
But Newsome ignored the police’s orders and kept going. She climbed all the way to the top of the flagpole at 30 feet in the air and removed one of the most dangerous and hateful symbols in the United States representing racism, segregation and pro-slavery ideas.
The Guardian reports Newsome and James Ian Dyson were both arrested by police and are being detained in custody. The charges against the two activists are not clear at this point.
Newsome sent a press release to the Guardian that read:
“We removed the flag today because we can’t wait any longer. It’s time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality.”
Alabama recently removed the Confederate flag and South Carolina’s Governor Nikki Haley made a call to remove the state’s flag but it still stood.
The “TakeitDown campaign,” a recent movement calling for local politicians to remove the flag in South Carolina and Mississippi is underway, but as Newsome wrote, there have been no immediate plans of action from lawmakers in both states.
Newsome’s badass and revolutionary efforts come on the heels of #TakeitDown and #KeepitDown and we salute her!
