Watch Missy Elliot Rip the Stage at the Essence Festival!
On the heels of Missy Elliot’s triumphant Super Bowl performance, where she totally upstaged Katy Perry and all of her colorblocked outfits, the original Supa Dupa Fly emcee/producer made a glorious return on the Essence Festival stage Sunday night in New Orleans!
Running through all of her bangers from 1997 to 2005—including “The Rain” and “Get Your Freak On,” the stage was ablaze and the audience was lit about it!
Since her Super Bowl surprise performance, Missy saw a 2500% sales increased on her line of hits and a renewed interest in her music from new fans, like teens and early 20-somethings who were questioning if Missy was a “new artist” when Perry brought her on stage. The blasphemy!
Missy addressed her new fans during her performance last night stating, “People always think I’m a new artist.” And someone yelled from the audience, “Young asses!” *hollers* We couldn’t agree more!
Later in the night, Missy was treated to a tribute by Solange, Beyonce and Kelly Rowland. We’re not certain what the tribute was, but from the looks of it, Missy was grateful. The rapper/producer extraordinaire thanked Solange over Twitter. Aww, Missy!
