It all began in 1971. Diane Vreeland ended at long and revolutionary stint at Vogue and took her eye for style and society to the upper eastside at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In desperate need of fundraising and something fierce to do with its exhaustive archive of historic costumes, Vreeland revitalized the Costume Institute and brought the world of fashion to the museum. Not to mention the dollars.

Originally called the Costume Institute Gala, the party has since transformed under the watchful eye of Anna Wintour to a worldly spectacle for Hollywood and glamour. It’s the biggest ticket of the year and a walk down the red carpet cements ones status as a fashion icon (and insider).
