Serena Williams Lost Grand Slam But She’s Still GOAT!

In the tennis match heard around the world this afternoon, Serena Williams, who was on the verge of a career Grand Slam, lost to Italian player Roberta Vinci during today’s U.S. Open semifinal.

Vinci was an unseeded Italian veteran playing in her first Grand Slam semifinal, who defeated Williams, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

During her post-match interview, Vinci apologized for her upset victory changing the storyline.

“For the American people, for Serena, for the Grand Slam and everything. Sorry guys. But today is my day.”

Unfortunately, this loss ruins any plans for Williams to have her first career Grand Slam, at least this year.

In their four previous meetings, Williams had never lost a set to Vinci and came into today’s match with a 33-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments. Williams had not lost a U.S. Open final since 2011.

Saturday’s Grand Slam final will be an all-Italian final Vinci and 26th-seeded Flavia Pennetta.

This loss will only make Williams a better competitor and we know she already has her mind set on next year.

But on a lighter note for Williams fans, here’s some news that will surely make you smile. A little girl by the name of Mimi Harris stars in a Facebook video that has since gone viral, where she says, “I was like Serena Williams,” when describing playing tennis with her dad while holding a copy of Sports Illustrated with Williams on the cover.

Williams saw the video and gave the little lady tickets to the U.S. Open.
