Earlier this week, NFL star Russell Wilson revealed some very intimate details about his new relationship with Ciara.

The 26-year-old Seattle Seahawks quarterback has always been outspoken about his Christian faith, and on Sunday, he made an appearance at The Rock Church and said that he and Ciara were waiting to have sex until marriage because God spoke to him and said he wanted him to lead her.

Wilson says of his girlfriend, “I met this girl named Ciara who was the most beautiful woman in the world, the most kind person, the most engaging person, everything that I could ever want. She was on tour and I was looking at her in the mirror, and she was sitting there. And God spoke to me and said, ‘I want you to lead her,’ And I was like, ‘Really? Right now?’ And He goes, ‘No, I want you and need you to lead her.’”

Wilson says he asked Ciara, ‘What would you do if we took all that extra stuff off the table and did it Jesus’ way?’

After being asked to clarify what he meant by “extra stuff,” Russell said, “Yeah, we’re talking about sex…Can we love each other without that? If you can really love someone without that then you can really love somebody…I ain’t gonna lie to y’all now. I need y’all to pray for us. Because I know y’all have seen her on the screen now. If there’s a 10, she’s a 15. Pray for me, keep my mind clear, keep my heart clear.”

Wilson added, “For me, I knew that God had brought me in her life to bless her and for her to bless me. We’re not going to be perfect, by any means. But he’s anointed both of us and he’s calling for us to do something special.”

As expected, Wilson’s comments have sparked much conversation with many applauding his and Ciara’s efforts in their relationship and others thinking it’s unconventional these days to wait until marriage to have sex.

Neither Ciara nor Wilson, who was married before, are virgins—Wilson was married before to Ashton Meem from January 2012 to April 2014 and Ciara has a son with ex-boyfriend Future. It is, however, honorable to see high-profile celebrities practice abstinence.

At 26, Wilson already has a Super Bowl ring under his belt and still has a long career ahead of him. Professional athletes have a stereotype of being unfaithful womanizers with several children out of wedlock, and even if that may be true for a small percentage, it’s not all of them.

Wilson isn’t the first athlete to publicly state he was abstaining from sex. NFL player Tim Tebow, who is outspoken about his Christian faith, said that he would be a virgin until marriage. Also, Prince Amukamara, New York Giants cornerback, was a virgin until he was married in 2014.

But let’s talk about Wilson’s statements about God wanting him to “lead” Ciara. Let’s start here: The pro-ball player is a long shot from Ciara’s previous boyfriends Bow Wow, 50 Cent and Future.

Maybe trying something new in her relationship with Wilson will lead her to getting what she wants: becoming a wife.

In interviews, Ciara’s spoken about wanting the type of long-lasting marriages she’s seen with her parents and grandparents. And we love us some CiCi, but could she be in love with love?

Loads of people are rooting for the new couple—including us—but let’s hope their choice to practice abstinence won’t get them a speeding ticket to the alter.

We don’t have to agree with the couple’s choice not to have sex, but we’re wondering where exactly Wilson thinks God wants him to “lead” Ciara? We’re about recognizing what the Bible says—and honoring everyone’s religious perspective, but we can’t help but notice how full of himself Wilson sounds.

Ciara doesn’t need a savior—she could use some new producers and songwriters, but another ego-driven “God walking on earth” she does not need! Wasn’t 50 cent bad enough?

We want to see one of our favorite starlets win, but we’re also hoping she doesn’t fall for the okie doke!

What do you think about Russell Wilson’s interview? Sound off!
