Call Him Dr. Yeezy! Kanye West Receives Honorary Doctorate
You can call him many things, just make sure you say ‘Doctor’ when addressing Kanye West after today! Yeezus will be receiving his honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago during the college’s graduation ceremony today.
One of the most prestigious schools in the country, SAIC sent an email to Complex explaining the honorary doctorate is given to “influential individuals” who earned “this distinguished award through their work which is always imaginative and aesthetically rich, and sometimes also provocative and controversial, shifting the cultural landscape in significant ways.” Yep, that sounds a lot like ‘Ye.
But Kanye news wouldn’t be Kanye news without a little backlash.
Some critics don’t agree with SAIC giving the honor to Kanye, as it has been presented to those such as Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic and Yoko Ono. But the school’s Dean, Lisa Wainwrigh stands by the decision. In April, she told The Fader she believes this to be a “high-low problem.”
“There’s still this sense that high art is what we do, is what we honor, is what we’re about,” Wainwrigh said. “And that pop culture is not what we teach in art school. Pop culture, mass culture—that’s a whole other thing, and we’re about high art. I think that’s a problem. We’re trying to collapse those boundaries a little bit. That’s what I like about Kanye.”
Kanye joins the president, Eloise W. Martin, director of SAIC Douglas Druick, gallery owner Rhona Hoffman, Janet Bryne Neiman and German artist Albert Oehlen as honorary degree recipient. On Sunday, West gave a full hour lecture at the school.
So much for a College Drop-out huh, ‘Ye? Hear his recent lecture at the school now!
