Alone on Thanksgiving? This Diner is Offering Free Dinner!

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to be with family and friends for the Thanksgiving holiday. Northville, Mich. restaurateur George Dimopoulos is offering free meals for those who are spending Thanksgiving alone at his diner, George’s Senate Coney Island Restaurant.

The restaurant has been doing this for the past 10 years, but the kind gesture recently went viral when a passerby snapped a photo of the sign on the window and posted it on the social media site, Reddit.

Dimopoulos told ABC News he does this because he knows firsthand how difficult it is when you’re alone on family holidays. At the age of 12, Dimopoulos left home moved to Athens, Greece. He often had to beg for food, and at 23, he immigrated to the United States and opened up successful Greek restaurants.

“The reason I do this is because I was alone one time,” he said. “I remember the good times and bad times.”

Dimopoulos is not worried about those who may try to take advantage of his generosity.

“I don’t question people when they ask for food. If they are alone, I give it to them anyway. I can see the way they look.”

This type of kindness is what the holiday season is all about.
