5 Free Things to Do in New York City this Weekend
New York City has a reputation for being one of the most expensive cities on the planet. Even though it’s an immutable fact, without a doubt, (the rent’s too damn high, duh!), there’s something about New York summers that always brings out the free.99 in things!
From food festivities and snazzy museum parties, there are loads of no-cost stops on the city’s agenda for you and the girls or umm…that second date you’ve been planning.
Here’s our picks for 5 free things you can get into in NYC this weekend!
Red Hook Fest
This Sunday, June 7, head out to Red Hook for dance, music and spoken word performances from local talent. Activities will include free kayak rides and the Red Hook trivia contest. You can also take in the visual art in the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s Spring Pier Art Show.
Target First Saturdays
This has become a summer staple on every first Saturday of a new month. Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum celebrates LGBTQ pride with performances from the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus and Malportado Kids, along with screenings of Mala Mala, Trans Lives Matter and Justice for Islan Nettles. The event also includes a pop-up gallery, exhibition and filmmaker talks. Admission is free between 5 PM-11 PM.
Figment Art Festival
Join NYC’s most quirky and artsy on Governor’s Island starting at 10 AM this Saturday. Get into large-scale sculpture, performance art and crafts. The fest is super free and the ferry is only $2.
First Fridays: Black Gay Edition
Help show love to New York’s lively Black LGBTQ community at the iconic Schomburg Center’s In The Life Archive! There will be sounds by DJ Missy B. and Craig Nice and special guided tours of “Curator’s Choice: Black Life Matters” by Steven G. Fullwood, founder of ‘In the Life Archive.’
Take the Water Taxi!
Head to Pier 16 near the Seaport downtown for a free ride on the city’s water taxi! Get a scenic and relaxing ride on the Hudson’s waves out to Redhook or Ikea. You don’t have to buy anymore furniture, just enjoy the ride!
