The Black Women Who Won Election 2016
Although the presidential race did not turn out the way we wanted, there is some good news in the political space. Despite everything, last night was a major win for Black women in the Senate, Congress and House of Representatives.
Kamala Harris won California’s open U.S. Senate seat beating out Loretta Sanchez. The former Attorney General will replace Barbara Boxer.
Val Demings became Florida’s 10th District Representative-elect. Demings is the former Orlando Police Chief.
Lisa Rochester made history as the first woman and African-American to be elected to Congress from Delaware.
Ilhan Omar won the Minnesota House seat, making her the first Somali-American to be in such a position. She received 80 percent of the vote.
It’s great to see Black women taking over politics. More of this, please!
