Gabby Douglas Responds to National Anthem Criticism

Gabby Douglas is currently participating in the 2016 Olympics in Rio as a member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, a squad which is a key favorite to take home several gold medals.

Winning gold medals is exactly what Gabby is doing again. She, along with her teammates, just won the gold medal for the team All-Around competition. While standing on the podium as the U.S. National Anthem was playing, Gabby did not place her hand on her heart.

Because the Internet was made for people to find fault with anything and everything, Gabby received criticism, but she addressed the trolls and haters in a classy way like she always does.

The 20-year-old wrote on Twitter, “In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played. I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I’m so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country.”

Many of us will never know the mental and emotional toll it takes to compete and win at the Olympics. Gabby was most likely trying to take in the moment and what it means for her and her teammates.
