Late Friday night, the world lost not only the greatest heavyweight boxer, but arguably the greatest athlete of all time, Muhammad Ali. Ali was 74-years-old and died at a Phoenix area hospital. Since the 1980s Ali battled Parkinson’s disease which affected his motor skills and ability to speak.

“After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening,” said family spokesperson Bob Gunnell said in a statement.

Ali was known for his outspokenness inside and outside of the boxing ring, and most notably his refusal to fight in the Vietnam War due to the fact his people, at the time, were not free in the United States.
