Kanye’s “The Life of Pablo” Will Make History as First No. 1 Album With No Sales!
Times are changing in the music industry. Up until a couple years ago, artists wanted digital and physical album sales. Now, it’s all about streams, which is changing the way we look at album sales.
Towards the end of 2014, Billboard began to include streams in album sales. An album sale now equals 10 track purchases (track equivalent albums -TEA) or every 1, 500 track streams (streaming equivalent albums-SEA).
On Friday, (April 1) Kanye‘s album, The Life of Pablo, finally became available on streaming services Apple Music and Spotify after being a Tidal-only exclusive. The album is proving to be a big success, and will most likely become the first number 1 album with no sales.
The Life of Pablo is not available in stores and HITS Daily Double and @chartnews say the album will rack up 60, 000 equivalent units based on TEA and SEA and will chart at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week.

With these changes, music purists and critics believe it’s becoming easier for artists to garner number 1 albums, which might take away the significance of having an album top the charts.
