‘American Idol’ Runner-Up LaPorsha Renae Gets Backlash For Anti-LGBT Comments!

If you watched this past season of “American Idol,” you’re more than familiar with the story and voice of LaPorsha Renae, who became runner-up this past Thursday. It’s been a whirlwind week for the 22-year-old mother and Mississippi native who also signed a contract with Motown Records.

However, people are talking about more than just LaPorsha’s voice, but some recent comments she made regarding the LGBT community.

She was asked by the MJS Big Blog her thoughts on her home state passing the religious freedom/anti-LGBT bill. Essentially, the bill allows for businesses, social workers and public employees to legally deny services if they believe marriage is between a man and a woman or “sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.” It also allows for people to discriminate against transgender individuals if they believe “gender is determined at birth.”

LaPorsha shared her thoughts saying, “They [LGBT community] are people just like us…They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons–whatever the reason is. You still treat each other with respect.  Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another.  I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way, it wasn’t how I was raised. But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people. We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.”

As you can imagine, there was much backlash surrounding her comments and LaPorsha clarified her statements tweeting, “We don’t have to agree with each other’s life choices to respect/love one another. Live and let live. #RENAETION #RespectThatWeAreDifferent”

We can’t recall a time when the state of Mississippi was ever progressive with anything having to do with freedom, but hopefully as LaPorsha grows and matures in her life and career, she’ll broaden her horizons and change her perspective on these types of issues.
