Amandla Stenberg Lands Lead in Black Lives Matter Inspired Movie!
Amandla Stenberg’s being is clearly made up of coconut oil, Black girl magic, and the melanin of ten thousand suns because the girl is blazing a path to the top and spreading awareness all along the way.
The young star has just landed the lead in the new movie The Hate U Give adapted from a novel of the same name. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a heated bidding war for the film rights to the book took place after the newly published book began making the rounds a little over a week ago.
Fox 2000 came out victorious and has tapped George Tillman Jr. to direct the script adapted by Audrey Wells.
The novel is the debut work from Angela Thomas and “follows a 6-year-old girl named Starr who grew up in a poverty-stricken slum, but now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she’s torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth.”
Thomas began the novel in 2011 and was further inspired as she watched the events surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement unfold. The title of the book is even inspired by Tupac’s tattoo T.H.U.G.
Stenberg took to Instagram to announce her new role and how excited she was:
I am so excited to announce that I will be starring in The Hate U Give, a film based on the novel by Angela Thomas inspired by Black Lives Matter. “Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg will star and George Tillman Jr. will direct the film adaptation from a script by Audrey Wells. Thomas’ story follows a 16-year-old girl named Starr who grew up in a poverty-stricken slum, but now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she’s torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth.” – @hollywoodreporter
