Former ‘Fresh Prince’ Star Janet Hubert Read Jada Pinkett Smith On Oscars Comments
Last week Jada Pinket Smith released a video urging a boycott of the Oscars for upholding a standard of whiteness for a second year in a row. While there were tons of people and celebrities who supported and echoed Jada’s sentiments, one shining voice was absolutely not here for Jada, Will Smith, or their interest in the Oscars.
Janet Hubert, best known as the original Aunt Viv on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, took to Facebook this weekend to give us a read so real, we renewed our library cards.
In four minutes Aunt Viv accomplished so much!
She let “Miss Thang” aka Jada know that her problems are insignificant.
“There is a lot of shit going on in the world that you all don’t seem to recognize. People are dying, our boys are being shot left and right. People are hungry, people are starving, people are trying to pay bills, and you talking about some muthafuckin’ actors.”
She explained that Black actors are not about to ride for Will and Jada.
“For you to ask other actors and other actresses to jeopardize their career and they’re standing in a town, the you know damn well that you don’t do that. Here’s the other thing, they don’t care! They don’t care!”
She told them life isn’t fair, get over it boo!
“I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living and made millions and millions of dollars from the very people they’re talking about boycotting just because you didn’t get a nomination. Just because you didn’t win, that is not the way life works, baby.”
She reminded Will, his acting don’t impress her.
“There are those out there who really deserved a nod and Idris Elba was one of them. Lord have mercy. “Beasts of No Nation” was incredible. That man is an incredible actor…you are not. maybe you didn’t deserve an Oscar. I didn’t think frankly you deserved a Golden Globe nomination with that accent.”
She clarified that Will and Jada are not royalty.
” Just because the world don’t go the way you want it to go doesn’t mean that you can go out and start asking people to sing “We Shall Overcome” for you. You ain’t Barack and Michelle Obama and y’all need to get over yourselves.”
She pointed out how petty Will and Jada are.
“You have a huge production company where you only produce your friends, your family and yourselves. So you ARE a part of Hollywood. You ARE a part of a system that is unfair.”
If you were prepared to call Janet Hubert petty for cracking open her book on this read, she’s way ahead of you. Hubert was quite clear that she’s not bitter about being booted off “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”some 20 years ago (which is debatable).
“Bitches please. It’s not about being bitter, it’s about being right.”
Watch Janet Hubert’s full rant and decide if she’s got a good point or if she really is just bitter!
To the Smiths!
