Beyonce’s Not Trying to Play Saartjie Baartman!

It turns out that all the rumors, buzz, and outrage over Beyonce’s involvement in a feature film about Saartjie “Sarah” Baartman may have all been for nothing.

Billboard reports Beyonce’s representatives deny any involvement in any kind of project related to Baartman.

In a statement to Billboard Tuesday, Beyonce’s rep says, “Beyonce is in no way tied to this project. This is an important story that should be told, however.”

When rumors started emerged from a report by the Sun Times Beyonce would be writing and starring in a film about the South African Black woman who was paraded as a “freak show”, the general response from most of the public wasn’t very positive.

While it’s sad Baartman’s story still isn’t being told in a feature film, it’s probably for the best Beyonce won’t be the one to tell it.

The story of Baartman, also known as “The Hottentot Venus”, is a complex, tragic, and ultimately landmark story in the history of Black women’s bodies in White society.

Baartman was taken from South Africa and lauded as an exhibit in “freak shows” and museums across Europe because of her extremely curvaceous figure, considered to be a disorder at the time by Europeans.

She died alone and desolate in England in the early 1800s in her mid-twenties and her remains weren’t brought back to her native South Africa until 2002.
Here’s hoping all the buzz around Beyonce and this story will push someone to take on the task of telling this important story on the global stage in the most honest, appropriate way possible.

Would you have been down for Beyonce as Baartman? Sound Off!
