Watch Men and Their Twisted Idea of Manhood in Under 3 Minutes

Ninety percent of the time it’s hard as hell to be a woman. We have struggles and issues men can’t even dream of. But one of the great benefits of being a woman is we’re allowed to explore how we feel, to work through our struggles, emotions, and identities.

Men aren’t always afforded that privilege, and that’s saying a lot considering how much inherit privilege they have simply because they are men.

But just like media is always telling women who they should be and what defines them, 2015 was a year for some pretty strong messages for men, too.

The Representation Project put together a two-minute video outlining how men have been represented in media in 2015 and it’s interesting to say the least.

Men’s perceptions of themselves based off of this video are just as twisted and troubled as we often paint women’s to be.

Unlike women, men aren’t really objectified in media so much as they’re built up to some impossible and unattainable standards, both physically and emotionally.

The role of masculinity is blurred, between sexual prowess, position in the home, physical and financial compensation.

But the video also sheds light on the new era of understanding in the ideas of masculinity. The men who embrace feminism and bash gender roles. The stay at home dads and the big men who cry, too.

The video is worth a watch to make us all more thoughtful and critical on how media and society are shaping our identities.
