Nigerian Couple Reportedly Kept a Slave for 24 Years!

Human trafficking and modern day slavery don’t just exist in those “Law and Order: SVU” episodes.

It’s more common than you’d think, and a Nigerian couple just learned the consequence for enslaving another human being.

Emmanuel Edet and his wife Antan Edet, a doctor and nurse respectively, came to Britain in 1989 from Nigeria. Along with them came a 13-year-old boy named Ofonime Sunday Inuk, whom they claimed was their son.

Instead of treating him as a son, the couple instead worked Inuk as an unpaid “houseboy” for 24 years.

He did everything in the home including cooking, cleaning, gardening, and babysitting the couple’s two actual sons.

The couple was arrested in 2013 after they left Inuk to go on holiday in Nigeria. Inuk contacted a charity to ask for help and explained his situation.

On Monday, almost three years later, the couple were sentenced to six years each by a London Judge.

According to AP Judge Graham Arran, the couple’s behavior robbed  Inuk “of the opportunity of leading a normal life.”

Is six years really enough punishment for taking 24 years of someone’s life? Sound off!
