Zoe Saldana’s Nina Simone Biopic Finally Gets Release Date!
Someone finally picked up the Nina Simone biopic, and come this December we’ll finally see what all the buzz is about!
RLJ Entertainment announced at the start of the Toronto Film Festival that it has acquired all North American rights to the film Nina, starring Zoe Saldana as singer, songwriter, and activist Nina Simone.
Robert L. Johnson, founder of BET networks, and RLJ Entertainment topper has expressed a deep affinity for Nina Simone so it’s no surprise that RLJ would pick it up.
Now the question that hangs in the air is, how well will the movie do?
Nina has been on the shelf for over 3 years now, as controversy surrounded Saldana playing the role of Nina Simone. It’s very apparent that Zoe Saldana is clearly quite a few shades lighter than Simone and her casting in the role highlighted an already well understood practice of Hollywood to whitewash media as much as they can.
Many were insulted that in 2015, where there were more than enough talented and qualified actresses of a darker complexion to play the role, Saldana was cast instead. Saldana admitted to passing on the project for over a year, knowing she looked nothing like Nina Simone, but claims to have come around after actresses more “physically right for the part” passed on it.
People still weren’t really buying what this movie was selling as some called for a boycott of the production, so it will be interesting to see if the reception will have changed since time has passed and another Simone documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone?, has been released.
The other mumblings surrounding the movie came from the release of promotional photos which appear to show Saldana in what some would call blackface and possibly a prosthetic nose. Oh Zoe.
The film will be released in theaters this December.
Will you be checking out Nina, or is the brown paper bag mentality just too much for you?
