Gabrielle Union Says She Feels Like She’s Wearing A Scarlet Letter Because She Has No Children
Gabrielle Union is like many other women who have chosen to have children later in life because she choose to establish her career first.
The newlywed who has been married to NBA star Dwyane Wade for a year, revealed in the October issue of Redbook she thinks it’s unfair to shame women for choosing to have babies later in life and it’s almost like wearing a scarlet letter.
Wade has three sons, but he and Union have no children together.
“So far, it has not happened for us. A lot of my friends deal with this. There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger. The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you’re wearing a scarlet letter.”
Union also spoke on the age difference between she and Wade.
“His teammates, were conceived when I was like, a senior in high school. I was in high school the same time as their parents! Sometimes he’ll be like, ‘Oh my God, he’s so old!’ about someone who’s 35. But, Dwyane’s an old 33, and I’m young 42, so it balances out.”
Choosing to have children later in life is something a lot of women go through. Most do this because they know after their career is set, they’ll have more stability.
Hopefully, Union and Wade are blessed with a child together. We can tell they would make great parents especially after seeing their wedding video they released this weekend, which is in the style of a romantic comedy movie trailer. The clip features Kevin Hart toasting the happy couple, John Legend singing at the ceremony and their family and friends.
