Rachel Dolezal Inspires White Girl Afros

A feature in the August issue of Allure magazine has many Black women calling foul! The popular beauty rag is giving White women a tutorial on how get an afro in the article, “You (Yes, You) Can Have An Afro.”

But Allure carefully instructs on achieving a “loose afro.” At least they have their expectations in check!

The woman featured is actress Marissa Neitling of the TNT show, “The Last Ship.”

It just so happens all of these “loose afros” are part of Allure’s “Retro Modern” 70s-inspired hairstyles which all feature White women.

To add insult to injury, no historical context of the afro was provided and there’s no Black model featured for the story.

Of course we know the afro is not a new hairstyle.

Loads of Black women proudly rock the style. Our mothers and fathers put afros on the map back in their day during the Black is Beautiful/Black Power movement.

Allure felt the brunt of the backlash that has many questioning why the magazine would think running that piece in such a manner was okay.

The magazine released a statement stating, “Using beauty and hair as a form of self-expression is a mirror of what’s happening in our country.”

I guess we have Rachel Dolezal and her “Blackness” to blame.

Add this to the list of Black things (like big booties, braids and hell, even collard greens) only becoming acceptable or on trend when it’s done by White people.
