Watch Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique Channel the Blues in ‘Bessie’

We’re only a few weeks away from the highly-anticipated  HBO biopic Bessie. Queen Latifah stars as the ‘Empress of the Blues’ and the film is co-written and directed by Dee Rees, the writer and director of the critically acclaimed feature film Pariah.

Bessie takes viewers on a journey of a struggling young singer and her transformation into one of the most successful artists of the 1920s—a time where it was a challenge for Black people in America to safely walk the streets, let alone become a national hero.

HBO and Rees pulled out mega star power. Mo’Nique stars as Ma Rainey, Michael Kenneth Williams, Tika Sumpter, Mike Epps, Khandi Alexander and Charles S. Dutton also star.

The film pulls the sheets uncovering, for some, an unexpected history for both Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. The women personified the blues—the pain, the partying, the booze and yes, the women.

‘Bessie’ airs on HBO Saturday May 16 at 8pm ET! Watch a clip of the ladies singing “Weepin’ Women Blues” now!
