10 Things You Should Know About Badass Marilyn Mosby

Chances are, you never heard of Marilyn Mosby before today. The fierce Black and female State Attorney of Baltimore City came before national news cameras and announced with sharpness, poise and vigilance that all six police officers involved in Freddie Gray’s death will be charged and are facing jail time. This case brought Mosby to the national stage and you might as well get use to seeing and hearing from her.

Here’s 10 things you should know about Marilyn Mosby and how badass she is!

1. She’s Fly and she’s only 35!

When we think of State Attorneys for major cities, we think of White, middle-aged and gray attorneys who’ve been in office forever. Mosby is the complete opposite. She’s under 40, basically a prodigy and she’s fly!

2. She Comes from a Family of Police Officers

Mosby’s mother, father, aunts, uncles and grandfather were all police officers. Her grandfather was one of the founding members of the first Black police organization in Boston.

3. She’s a HBCU Alum 

Mosby is a graduate of Tuskegee University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and graduated magna cum laude. She then went on to Boston College Law School.

4. She’s a Native of Boston

Mosby grew up in inner city Boston and was raised by a single mother.

5. She Made History

Elected in November 2014, at the age of 35, Mosby has made history as the youngest top prosecutor of a major city.

6. Gun Violence Hits Home for Her

During her campaign for state attorney, Mosby spoke out about losing her 17-year-old cousin to gun violence when he was mistaken for a drug dealer and killed outside of her home by another 17-year-old. He was a college-bound honor student.

7. She’s Basically Claire Huxtable

She is married to Nick Mosby, a Baltimore City Councilman representing West Baltimore. The couple met while they were studying at Tuskegee University. The couple has two daughters, 6-year-old Nylyn and 4-year-old Aniyah.

 8. She Has a History of Speaking Truth to Power

Being the daughter of police officers, Mosby is a strong supporter of good police procedures and has zero tolerance when it comes to police brutality. In 2014, during her campaign for state’s attorney, Mosby said, “Police brutality is completely inexcusable. I’m going to apply justice fairly, even to those who wear a badge.”

 9. She Gave the ‘Kanye Shrug’ on TV!

Mosby made it clear in her announcement today, “No one is above the law.” And when you’re unbothered about the pressure, the stakes and who has an opinion, nothing is better suited than a good ole’ ‘Ye Shrug!

10. People Live for Her on Twitter

Mosby is a Twitter user @marilynmosbyesq. She tweets developments in her office, “#proudmommy” and “#proudwife” moments and retweets loving Baltimore residents who happen to be illustrators and sketches stunning pictures of her. And not only are people drawing social media monuments of Mosby, they’re predicting she’ll be in the White House one day!
