Police Fatally Shot 23-Year-Old Baltimore Woman And Wounded Her 5-Year-Old Son

On Tuesday morning, social media users awoke to another hashtag trending due to a Black person being killed by police.

This time, it was 23-year-old Korryn Gaines of Baltimore. Gaines was shot and killed by Baltimore County police after an hours-long standoff and her 5-year-old son was wounded, but suffered non-life threatening injuries.

It all began Monday morning around 9:20 am when Baltimore County police officers showed up to Gaines’ apartment to serve warrants to Gaines and her boyfriend. There was an arrest warrant for Gaines due to failure to appear in court after a traffic violation in March. The boyfriend was wanted on an assault charge.

Police say the officers knocked on the door for 10 minutes and no one answered even though they could hear people inside. After getting a key to the apartment from the landlord, Gaines was said to be sitting on the floor with one arm wrapped around her 5-year-old son and the other hand holding a shotgun.

The boyfriend had already fled the scene with Gaines’ 1-year-old daughter. He would later be taken into custody and released.

The SWAT team was then called and a standoff began for several hours.

Around 3 PM, police say Gaines raised her gun at the officers and threatened to shoot them if they did not leave. This is when the officers opened fire. Gaines is said to have fired back. When the officers fired again, they had killed her and her son was wounded.

As of all of this was going on, Gaines was posting video of the situation on her social media accounts, which were later shut down by the police after they told Facebook to do so.

Gaines had a history with the Baltimore County police and she also videotaped her traffic stops.

As you can imagine, news of the events surrounding her death sparked outrage across social media. Many believe the police could have done more to deescalate the situation and should have taken into account there was a child in the apartment with Gaines. It’s also being said Gaines suffered from mental health issues.

And to make this situation even more complicated, the officers may not have been wearing body cameras.

Gaines’ death makes her the ninth Black woman to be shot and killed by police in 2016.
