New Jay Z Song “Spiritual” Reflects on Police Killings of Black Men

Times like this, where people are at a loss due to the senseless acts of violence and police killings constantly taking place in this country, they criticize celebrities who choose not to use their platform to address social issues.

This week alone, we’ve seen more celebrities and professional athletes share their thoughts and reflect on this week’s unfortunate and tragic events. Late Thursday night, Jay Z released a new song called “Spiritual,” which addresses the issue of police brutality.

Accompanying the song, was a letter where Jay says the record was recorded awhile ago and president of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), Punch, told him to release it after the police shooting of Mike Brown.

Jay wrote, “Sadly, I told him, ‘This issue will always be relevant.’ I’m hurt that I knew his death wouldn’t be the last.”

In the letter, Jay also wrote, “I’m saddened and disappointed in THIS America – we should be further along.”

“Blessings to all the families that have lost loved ones to police brutality,”

Jay ended the letter with a quote from Frederick Douglass.
