Get a First Look at Ava Duvernay’s New Series ‘Queen Sugar’

If you’ve been missing the cinematic genius of our fave Ava Duvernay, then you need to see the trailer for her latest project!

Duvernay has been hard at work on a new series for OWN called “Queen Sugar”, based off the Natalie Baszile novel of the same name.

The show stars Rutina Wesley, in an Ida B. Wells role, as an activist and journalist in New Orleans. Dawn-Lyen Gardner stars opposite as her sister who moved from Los Angeles to Louisiana to live in the 800-acre sugarcane farm she inherited from her father.

OWN released the first official teaser trailer on Wednesday and it’s masterful. The visual aesthetic is beautiful and chaotic, flashing through seemingly unconnected scenes, giving glimpses of drama. Watching the trailer doesn’t tell you much about the plot but it makes you want to know more.

“Queen Sugar” is co-created by Oprah continuing the epic partnership between her and Ava that we witnessed in Selma. Oprah even has a recurring role in the show.

OWN hasn’t given a release date yet, but we know it’s coming sometime this fall.

So in the mean time, get full on this trailer!
