First Lady Michelle Obama Dropped Gems of Advice At the United State of Women Summit!

The United State of Women Summit took place on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., where notable women and girls took part in discussions based on the issues affecting women in society.

One of the standout moments was the conversation between First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. The First Lady dropped  gems of advice for young women when it came to finding balance in our lives, not comprising on what we want and removing the haters from our inner circles.

Obama was asked how she designed her role in the White House, and she said, “If you do not take control of your time and your life, other people will gobble it up. If you don’t prioritize yourself, you constantly start falling lower and lower on your list. ”

Winfrey added to that saying, “I think that’s one of the number one issues with women. I never, in all my years of interviewing, have ever heard a man say, ‘You know, I just don’t have the time. I just don’t. I don’t find a way to balance.'”

Obama replied, saying, “You know why? Because they don’t have to balance anything. Sorry. I hope that that is changing, but so many men don’t have to do it all.”

The First Lady went on to talk about how years ago she took daughter, Sasha, on a job interview with her where she negotiated a great job offer as Vice President of Community Outreach at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

“I got that job because I didn’t compromise,” said Obama. “And I said, ‘If I take this job, I need flexibility, and I need full pay.'”

“You knew your value,” said Winfrey.

“And that goes back to knowing who you are,” said Obama. “And I think as women and young girls, we have to invest that time in getting to understand who we are and liking who we are. Because I like me! I’ve liked me for a very long time.”

Obama continued on saying, “But you gotta work to get to that place. And if you’re going out to the world as a professional and you don’t know who you are, you don’t know what you want, you don’t know how much you’re worth, then you have to be brave. And then you have to count on the kindness and goodness of others to bestow that goodness on you when you should be working to get it on your own ’cause you deserve it.”

She gave advice to women and young girls on how they can to a place where they like themselves which included “get the haters out of your life” and “surround yourself with goodness.”

Of course she didn’t leave out the fellas on how they can support women.

“Be better,” said Obama. “Just be better. I could go on, but I’m not. You get the point, fellas.”
