Queens Recognize Queens: Why Beyonce Featured Serena Williams in ‘Lemonade’

If there’s one thing that Black women are good at, it’s acknowledging and celebrating the wonder that is Black women. So when the reigning queen of the music game tapped the queen of the tennis courts to make a cameo in her smash visual album, it only made sense.

Among all the Black girl magic that was Beyonce’s Lemonade one shining moment was watching Serena Williams elegantly twerk her life away.

At the Italian Open, Williams gave a little more detail on why Queen Bey picked her as a feature in the album.

According to reports Serena explained, “I have known the director since I was like 9 years old. I know Beyoncé pretty well, so they were like, ‘We would love for you to be in this particular song. It’s about strength and it’s about courage and that’s what we see you as.’”

So essentially queen recognized queen. Beyoncé is a pillar of Black Girl Magic in her own right but it’s even more amazing that she recognizes that Serena is a force in Black Girl Magic herself.

Beyonce even let Serena have free reign over what she did in “Sorry,” as Serena told reporters, “She told me that she just wants me to dance, like just be really free and just dance like nobody’s looking and go all out. So that wasn’t easy in the beginning, but then it got easier. I thought that particular song on the visual album was really a strong song, and it was also really fun at the same time.”

What’s really great is things coming full circle, since people have mocked Serena for her strength, but that same strength helped her cop a feature on one of the hottest musical masterpieces on the block!
