Gugu Mbatha-Raw Set to Star In Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “An Untamed State”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s rising stars after her critically-acclaimed performances in films such as Beyond the Lights and Belle. Most recently, she starred alongside Will Smith in Concussion, and for her next project she will reunite with Love & Basketball and Beyond the Lights director, Gina Prince-Bythewood for the film adaptation of Roxane Gay‘s novel, An Untamed State.

The script will reportedly be co-written by Prince-Bythewood and Gay for Fox Searchlight. The story centers on a Haitian-American woman who is abducted in front of her husband and child for ransom. The book delves into the privilege which made the woman a target for her kidnappers and how she fights for survival.

It seems as though Hollywood is hearing the call for more diversity and more roles are opening up for people of color, particularly women.

Prince-Bythewood will also be directing a miniseries for FOX called Shots Fired, which will star Sanaa Lathan and feature Mack Wilds.
