‘OITNB’ Star Dascha Polanco Opens Up About Being Afro-Latina On ‘The ‘Breakfast Club’

Dascha Polanco can currently be seen in the romantic comedy, The Perfect Match, which is now in theaters, and in the hit Netflix original series, “Orange Is the New Black.”

The actress recently stopped by Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club for an interview, and the topic of the Nina Simone biopic with Zoe Saldana came up. Charlemagne Tha God asked Polanco her thoughts on if was insensitive to Simone’s legacy to cast a Black woman with very different features from the singer.

Polanco is like the rest of us who would have loved to see her “Orange Is the New Black” co-star Uzo Aduba take on the role. Then Charlemagne suggested the outcry was due to the fact Simone was African American and a Dominican woman is playing her.

Polanco, who is Dominican, replies by explaining she is an Afro-Latina, which also makes her a Black woman.

“I consider myself to be a black woman. And I think a lot of Dominicans should, because from what I see, that’s what we are,” said Polanco.

No lies were told there. African-Americans and Afro-Latinos from Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico were all part of the slave trade.

Check out the interview below where this part of the conversation begins around the 5-minute mark.
