Will VH1’s New Hip Hop Drama ‘The Breaks’ Rival ‘Empire’?

It’s been widely reported VH1 has a hot new hip hop drama in the works that could rival FOX’s ‘Empire.’ Today news officially hit with more details on the TV movie titled The Breaks and which actors will make up the cast.

The pilot is based on Dan Charnas’ best-selling book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop. The show will star Wood Harris (‘The Wire’), Mack (Tristan) Wilds (‘The Wire,’ ‘90210’), Afton Williamson (Pariah), David Call (‘Gossip Girl’) and Antonie Harris (‘Power’). Seith Mann, a prominent writer and producer from ‘The Wire’s’ camp will direct, write and executive produce.

DJ Premier will be the show’s executive music producer taking on a Timberland-like role the celebrated producer has on FOX’s ‘Empire.’

The Breaks follows a similar format like many cable series on VH1 including ‘Single Ladies’ and ‘Hit the Floor.’ The drama will premiere as a TV movie and based on performance, the network could potentially order a full series.

Like ‘Empire,’ ‘The Breaks’ follows the story of an iconic hip hop mogul. Harris will star as Barry Fouray, the founder of Fouray Management. Wilds will play Daryl “DeeVee” Van Putten Jr., an aspiring producer in search of the next hot rapper and Williamson will play Nikki Jones, a sort of Grace-like character and George Washington University alum who’s intelligent, gorgeous and a self-titled hip hop head. Doesn’t look like there’s a Cookie-equilvalent which is a total thumbs down for The Breaks!

The movie is set to premiere this fall and we can’t wait! Are you watching The Breaks? Sound off!
