Some of the hottest Black female storytellers cover Essence Magazine’s “Game-changers” issue. Directors Debbie Allen (‘Scandal’), Ava DuVernay (Selma), Shonda Rhimes (‘Scandal,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy’), Mara Brock Akil (‘Being Mary Jane,’ ‘The Game’) cover the magazine, including newcomer Issa Rae (‘Awkward Black Girl,’ ‘Insecure’). The gorgeous cover girls have been Instagramming and tweeting their excitement for the announcement.

Mara Brock Akil comments on the sisterly bond the directors share on Instagram, “The love I feel for them is tantamount to the inspiration they give me! I am beyond honored!”

Duvernay, director of the Oscar-nominated Selma movie, tweeted, “I hope someone sees this and thinks: ‘I will live the life I choose.'” We do, too, Ava! Love this!
